My favourite landmark is…the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It's quite funny to see and it takes some time to get your head round the fact that it's still standing! You can easily spend a couple of hours there soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying a coffee at one of the small cafés.

An activity I love is…cycling. If you are an addicted cyclist, remember that Tuscany is the cradle of cycling in Italy. It's a religion here and every weekend many enthusiasts take to the countryside roads. So bring your bike (or you can rent one) and have fun!

A great restaurant to try is…La Gattaiola in Fauglia, a small village about 12 miles from Pisa. It has a wonderful atmosphere and offers gorgeous Tuscan food. The very funny and friendly owner is a real character and makes all his guests feel very welcome.

A different type of…boat race is Il Palio di San Ranieri held in Pisa in June. The four quarters of the city compete in a spectacular challenge along the Arno River. The teams climb ropes, grab flags and create great excitement amongst the crowds on the riverbanks.

My favourite walk is…the route of the old Roman way from the valley to the gates of Volterra - this is quite a steep climb but the ancient Etruscan tombs along the way are well worth a visit…and the ice creams in Volterra make all the effort worthwhile.
